About Me

Headshot of ski instructor Colin Root wearing a ski helmet and goggles and his signature pink ski jacket at Mt. Hood Meadows

Hi, I’m Colin Root! I teach Alpine and Telemark ski lessons and specialty clinics at Mt. Hood Meadows in Oregon, my home resort. I also train alpine and telemark instructors at Mt. Hood Meadows, and train telemark instructors all around the Pacific Northwest as a PSIA-NW Telemark Education Staff member.

I have taught skiing professionally for more than 20 years, and I am passionate about helping you find more joy in the mountains.

I hold current Level III certifications in both Alpine and Telemark skiing.

Level III is the highest certification level of the Professional Ski Instructors of America (PSIA).

My Teaching Approach

The best skier on the mountain is the one having the most fun. Let’s explore ways to make skiing more enjoyable for you.

I have devoted more than twenty years to helping skiers like you to hone their technical skills, increase their efficiency, learn new tactical strategies, find better ways to cope with fear and anxiety, and explore ideal terrain for personal growth.

I would be honored to share some of those hard-won insights with you, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to being your guide, mentor, friend, and coach.

In my lessons, I create a low-pressure, fun environment where play, experimentation, and exploration reign supreme.

Private Lesson Coaching Promise

Whether you want a technique tune-up, a masterclass in extreme skiing, an adventure to the mountain’s best secret stashes, or the best possible introduction for your first time on skis, I am passionate about helping you make your skiing dreams come true.

I promise to create a safe, exciting learning environment that honors your experiences, adapts to your learning style, draws upon your skills, and maximizes your skiing fun. My coaching will be 100% custom-tailored to suit your unique personal goals. You’ll be amazed by what a few hours of private coaching can do for your skills, confidence, and enjoyment.

Skiers often invest heavily in equipment, but frequently forget to invest in skills development. Skis are just tools, so make sure you’re getting the most out of them by building your own skills with a professionally certified expert mentor.

Let’s make skiing more efficient, more effective, and more fun for you!

Testimonials

Colin is the best ski coach my kids (age 11, 13) have had — he has right balance of fun and encouragement but also pushes shows they can do more than they perhaps knew.   When skiing at Mt Hood Meadows, we’d call and request Colin every time.

Also Colin was extremely helpful when it was time to test and buy skis — he sent us a lot of info/perspective to think through.  Fantastic!

Colin Wilson coached my two boys and me regularly from March 2017 to July 2019, and proved to be the most inspirational and impactful ski instructor / coach we’ve ever trained with.

Colin provided the skiing foundations, expert coaching, and love of the sport that William (initially 4 y/o) and Thomas (initially 7 y/o) needed. He has a unique ability to  connect with and genuinely inspire his students, to identify training needs and teach focused techniques. Colin coached the kids to progress from Novice and Blue skiers to Double Black Diamond skiers in just one to two short years.

Building on the solid base of skills gained from Colin, both Thomas and William ultimately joined the Mt. Hood Meadows Freeride Team and qualified for the 2020 USASA National Ski Championships.

Feeling left out, I hired Colin for my own, long-needed “tune-up” on advanced and expert terrain. Colin let me (the old dad) try out his ski blades and race skis, and coached me to re-nail key skills at carving, moguls and steeps. I can now keep up with the kids!

Colin met me regularly in a trainer/coach capacity for my PSIA Level III exam preparations. He provided instant feedback, applied laser-focused drills, and used a wide variety of teaching methods to improve my off-piste skiing at a very high level of performance — particularly on steeps, moguls, and icy conditions.

Colin’s feedback and exercises helped me make instant improvements that made me feel more stable and in control, despite the fact that we were skiing the most difficult terrain on the mountain — runs that most people wouldn’t even attempt.
